2. Aruvam in the worship of Shiva

முனைவர் செ.சாந்தி/Dr.S.Santhi

Abstract

A lingam sometimes referred to as linga or Shiva linga, is an abstract of the Hindu deity Shiva in Shaivism. It is typically the primary murti or cult image in Hindu temples dedicated to Shiva, also found in smaller shrines, or as self-manifested natural objects. Saivism prescribes certain practices to grow spiritually. These practices are called Sariya, Kiriya, Yoga and Jnana. Sariya is doing service to devotees and in temples. Worshipping Lord Siva with body and mind is Kiriya. Meditating on Siva without allowing the mind to stray outwards and getting united mentally with Him is Yoga. Understanding the books of wisdom and staying in the Grace of Siva is Jnanam. The Saiva Siddhanta further says, God Siva in His inherent form is formless. To bestow grace to the souls He manifests in various forms. His manifested forms are grouped into three categories. They are arupa (Aruvam) form (without a body), rupa (uruvam)form (with the body) and rupa-arupa (aruvuruvam) form (with and without body). This worship is one of the specialties found in Avudaiyarkoil in the Pudukkottai district of Tamil Nadu. Worships such as Aruvam and Aruvuvam Uruvam are generally classified separately from the Linga worship. Therefore, this article is designed to highlight the significance of the worship of Lord Shiva only after first describing the data on the antiquity of Linga worship.
